Reggae Album in the Spotlight

When you listen to as much music as I do (for posting to my three music blogs) it becomes difficult sometimes to totally quantify what you mean when you say that you "Love" a album or a musician.

But the word "Love" is not an over statement in this case. When I think about how long I have owned this music, and how much time I still spend listening to it, it justifies my use of the word "Love" when talking about it.

That's high praise coming from the king's youngest son, Damian Marley, and it's one of the genre's oldest debates: Who really rules classic reggae -- Bob Marley or Dennis Brown? Even Bob Marley hailed Brown as the best reggae singer in the world.

Toronto, like London is home to a sizable West Indian community, so it's not surprising to find a reggae band based there. What is surprising is finding one this good. Earth, Roots and Water were essentially the house band for Summer Records, a local operation with a studio wired by Jamaican dub pioneer King Jammy that hosted reggae heavyweights like Jackie Mittoo. One could easily mistake Innocent Youths, released in 1977, for a lost Kingston classic

Cocoa Tea (born September 3, 1959 as Calvin George Scott, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae dancehall singer, songwriter, and DJ. He was popular in Jamaica from 1985, but has become successful worldwide only since the 1990s. One of his most famous songs is "Rikers Island", which was later put into a dub version by Nardo Ranks entitled "Me No Like Rikers Island" (featured on Dancehall Reggaespanol) which was released the same year as the original Rikers Island. Luciano's music is influenced by Stevie Wonder, Frankie Paul and late reggae singer Dennis Brown. It was later on that he changed his stage name to Luciano while often being referred to as "Jah Messenjah" and also at around that time collaborating with Fattis Burell's Xterminator label where he developed his conscious roots aspect. After recording several LPs for Burell he recorded a set for Island records before starting an independent career recording. Luciano's most recent work to date is his album 'Jah Words' (released worldwide April 26 2005 on the RAS record's label) which features such singles like the romantic 'Angel Heart' and the political 'Cry for Justice', the album also features his heavenly single with a distinctable thumping dancehall beat named 'Why Should I' with backup vocals by Shelene Thomas, Luciano even recorded a video for 'Why Should I' not widely know commercially but notably a dancehall classic like many.

Doing good works are not confined to just music for Luciano, as he is a firm believer that he should be a positive role model. He says "I've never stooped low and I'm not gonna bow to Babylon and no matter how much me angry bout certain tings, me nah come pon stage and express myself inna no negativeness". As a messenger, Luciano always strives to be true and righteous as he delivers the word of Jah. He says, "I cannot become egotistical about it. Unfortunately he is currently involved in a hpolice hostage situation

The group is perhaps best known for two classic roots reggae songs, "War" and "Bredda Gravalicious" as well as the more pop influenced "All Over The World". Their album Firehouse Rock and its title track was one of their early 1980s successes.

Lady Saw (born Marion Hall, 12 July 1972 Saint Mary Jamaica), is a Jamaican reggae singer, known as "the first Lady of Dancehall". She is the first female deejay to win a Grammy Award and to be certified a triple -platinum artist. She is also the first woman to headline dancehall shows outside her native Jamaica.

While lyrics about guns and masculine themes dominated the dancehalls of West Kingston, she sang sexually explicit lyrics, known as "slackness", from her perspective as a female. Recording for the local Diamond label, she released early hits like "If Him Lef" and "Stab Out de Meat", which was often met with mixed reaction by audiences. At that time, she also became known for her raucous stage shows, which usually included picking men from the audience (or sometimes her own band members) to pull on stage and to simulate sex acts with.

Due to her penchant for outspokeness and what was considered vulgarity, she was banned from many events due to her lyrics. Male contemporaries of Lady Saw were performing similar lyrics and stage shows, but as a female, Lady Saw endured censorship and even outright banning in more than a few Jamaican parishes. The Twinkle Brothers were formed in 1962 by brother Norman (vocals, drums) and Ralston Grant (vocals, rhythm guitar) from Falmouth, Jamaica. Half Pint's is small in stature but has a terrific voice and huge on-stage presence. Born Lindon Roberts, but affectionately called Half Pint, he is a product of the West Kingston enclave of Rose Lane, a community in adjacent proximity to Trenchtown which has produced the likes of Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Toots Hibbert and a host of other international Reggae superstars. He was nicknamed “Half Pint” by a Mr. Brown, who was the father of one of his mother’s friends in nearby Waterhouse.

Pint’s first single, “Sally,” was released in 1983 followed by “Winsome,” which went on to be covered by the Rolling Stones in 1987.

It has a musical keyboard on top, and is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument. Pressing a key opens a hole, allowing air to flow through a reed. The keyboard is usually two or three octaves long. Melodicas are small and light enough to be carried around.
